Daily diary – February 27 2025

Despite the choppy sea, we headed straight out into the bay, where we usually go for summer, as the whales were leaving Hafnarfjodur yesterday so we thought we’d look out here to find them! After a thorough search we found one blow! It was from a familiar humpback whale that we had seen in Hafnarfjodur harbour. Then we spotted another blow, and another, and another! We looked out into the distance and could see hundreds of birds gathering. Underneath them was 6-10 humpback whales and 100s of white-beaked dolphins. They were in a feeding frenzy! Lunge feeding humpback whales! Jumping dolphins! It was incredible! It was definitely worth the trip out.

We set back out to the same area to find the humpback whales from this morning. Once we sailed against the choppy sea, we were soon rewarded with a pair of humpback whales and a pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were surfacing all around the boat! We could see several other blows in the distance but got to experience these two up close.
