Daily diary – January 1 2025
After celebrating the New Year last night whilst watching the firework display and the northern lights simultaneously, everyone was ready to start 2025 off with some whale watching. We headed out into the calmest seas and bluest skies! It was a bit of a slow start, and we ending up searching for a few hours before we had found our first sighting! It was a harbour porpoise jumping through the small waves made by the boat! We continued on as the porpoise wasn’t very interested in us and we could finally see a blow in the distance! It was a humpback whale! It was diving for 10 minutes at a time and we got to see it a few times before heading back to harbour, so we gave everyone complimentary tickets to come back again.
The perfect weather continued in for the afternoon, as we headed out into the bay, we could see lots of seals around the boat! The top layer of the ocean was frozen and the seals were hiding near the ice as the boat broke through it! Soon we came across a humpback whale, a different one to this morning! We watched it dive many times and then soon came across a seal hauled out on the ice! It was so cool to see. We then found the humpback whale and watched it dive right in front of the boat before we headed back home.
