Daily diary – May 13 2025

We have been enjoying the sun the last few days, and it spoiled us again today! The sky was blue all day but we had a bit of wind to keep us cool. In the morning, the waves were quite big on the way out. Once we reached the centre of the bay we found hundreds of birds feeding! This included Arctic terns, Arctic skuas, and puffins! We came across our first humpback whale and then even a second one as well. We stayed with the second for longer and recognised it! It has this huge propeller scar on the front left of its flank.

For the afternoon, the wind had calmed down enough for there to no longer be any white caps. Once we reached the same area, we found two humpback whales again. After seeing the first whale fluke dive, we realised it was the same as the first one from this morning. We then went over to the second and even found some white-beaked dolphins! There was a pod of 6-8 individuals and they were jumping around us and swimming at the bow! After, we went to the second humpback whale and it was surfacing very quickly before diving again. It came up right next to the boat to surprise us! And this was a third humpback whale in the bay! On our way back to harbour we even had a very beautiful encounter with a minke whale! You could see the snout break the water nicely.
