Northern lights diary – January 9th 2026

Northern lights viewed from a luxury aurora watching cruise from Reykjavik in Iceland 14

Sunrise: 11:09 UTC

Sunset: 15:59 UTC

Kp : 1,5/9

Moon status: 71 % illuminated

Also this time the wait wasn’t long, and shortly after we left the port, the first hint of the aurora could already be seen. After about twenty minutes, it began to intensify, until it appeared in all its beauty. Unpredictability is typical of aurora, and after just a few moments, it began to fade, only to reappear after about a quarter of an hour and we were able to take hundreds of pictures. It continued to appear and disappear like this until the end of the tour. What a night!
