Whale Watching Daily Diary –10th June 2026

Humpback whale flukes showing their unique black and white pattern. Whale watching Reykjavik.

Morning Tour

This morning in Faxaflói Bay, we were treated to exceptional whale-watching conditions. Under clear blue skies, bright sunshine, and calm seas, visibility was excellent throughout the trip. The highlight of the morning was the sighting of approximately four humpback whales. The whales were actively surfacing around the bay, giving everyone on board fantastic views of their powerful blows, graceful dives, and distinctive tail flukes. With the sea almost mirror-like at times, the conditions made it easy to spot the whales and appreciate their movements against the stunning backdrop of the bay.

Afternoon Tour

We began with a brief encounter with a fast-moving minke whale, which surfaced a few times before continuing on its way. Soon after, we found several humpback whales in the area, and one individual in particular stole the show. This whale seemed determined to entertain us, putting on an incredible display that lasted for nearly half an hour. It repeatedly lifted and slapped its pectoral fins against the surface, almost as if it were waving at us. The performance didn’t stop there: powerful tail slaps echoed across the calm water, and the whale even breached several times, launching its massive body out of the sea in a spectacular display of strength and agility. The afternoon turned into a truly remarkable trip. Witnessing a humpback whale so active and playful for such an extended period is a rare treat and one that will be remembered by everyone on board.
