Whale Watching Daily Diary – 1st June 2026

Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; Humpback whale floating upside down with its fins held high out of the water

Morning Tour

Today, the conditions for a whale-watching tour were perfect: a typical summer day, as Iceland is currently experiencing a small heat wave. The sea was very calm, so visibility was excellent. It wasn’t difficult to spot a humpback whale splashing around. The one we spotted today was larger than average and very active on the hunt. Less than a mile away, we spotted another, slightly slower-moving but still in hunting mode. They did not swim together because we know that it is typical for humpback whales to be solitary but both showed a rather curious attitude and several times they came very close to the boat. We know we were very lucky today.

Afternoon Tour

In the afternoon we saw some humpback whales again but this time it was a bit more difficult to find them and the ones we saw were not the same ones as in the morning. We did find one that was smaller, faster, and more unpredictable in its movements. It kept moving here and there, making it a bit more difficult to follow and show to our passengers. However, at a certain point, it came quite close, showing its tail several times, giving us a real spectacle. Our passengers couldn’t have chosen a better day for a whale-watching excursion!
