Whale Watching Daily Diary – April 16th 2026
Today’s weather conditions were perfect – the sun was shining and the sea was very calm. We set sail from the old harbour in Reykjavik towards the open waters of Faxaflói Bay, and our path was frequently crossed by flocks of puffins!
About 40 minutes after setting off, we spotted the first few spouts from humpback whales – they are still in the area where they were actively feeding in the previous days.
Thanks to the calm sea, we could clearly see huge shoals of capelin underwater, which is the main source of food for our whales. In the end, we saw around 7 humpbacks, which were exceptionally relaxed that morning. They surfaced to breathe and remained very close to the water’s surface the whole time, making it easy for us to spot their white pectoral fins. There were also 4 minke whales in the area, but they kept their distance from our boats.
The afternoon tour was equally rich in sightings – 10 humpbacks and 5 minke whales. This time, the whole area was swarming with a huge number of diving northern gannets, and the whales were actively hunting too. Once, we even managed to see a whale’s enormous open mouth above the water’s surface!
A fantastic tour and happy passengers!
