Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; White-beaked dolphin fins swimming through the ocean

There are just two days to go until the official start of summer in Iceland, and you can really feel it! The sea was calm today, and the temperature reached a whopping 8 degrees! The only downside was the very thick fog, which reduced visibility as early as Engey and Akurey.

We sailed far out today, nearly 13 miles from the old harbour in Reykjavik, to find signs of marine mammals in the area. Today, due to the limited visibility, we had to use all our senses to track the whales – our eyes, ears and noses.
And we succeeded! The first to appear before our eyes was a minke whale… first one, then two… eventually we saw about six individuals swimming around the ships! Then, a few hundred metres away, we also spotted a pod of white-beaked dolphins. Alongside about five adults were three young dolphins, half their size!

In the afternoon, the weather remained the same, and we set out for the same spot we’d visited that morning. We managed to spot three minke whales, a pod of white-beaked dolphins and three humpback whales, which were incredibly relaxed, drifting just below the surface, allowing us to get a good look at their beautiful white fins. But eventually, one of them even showed us its tail!

We give the day a thumbs up!
