Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; White-beaked dolphin fins swimming through the ocean

The sea was a bit choppy today, which meant it was a bit harder than usual to spot the whales, as they were better camouflaged amongst the waves. However, we didn’t let that stop us and we gave it a try anyway. After about an hour of sailing offshore, we managed to spot something: a shy, rather elusive humpback whale that never dared to get too close to the boat. Then again, not all humpback whales behave in the same way; just like us humans, there are days when they prefer to be on their own rather than socialise. On the way back, near the harbour, we managed to spot a minke whale, which appears to have been lingering for a few days amongst the islets of Engey and Akurey.

The afternoon was much the same. Although the wind was stronger than in recent days, the sky was clear and cloudless – something one learns to appreciate even more here in Iceland. This time, the humpback whale was closer to the coast and we managed to catch a glimpse of its beautiful tail a couple of times, which made the whole journey and search well worth the effort.
