Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; White-beaked dolphin fins swimming through the ocean

The weather conditions were more favourable for whale-watching than yesterday. This morning, after about an hour’s sailing, we came across a humpback whale that showed itself a few times, though it remained rather shy. In the afternoon, we got a lot of whale activity. The tour got off to a great start with the sighting of two minke whales swimming just a few metres off the port of Reykjavik. We managed to see them from quite close up, something that doesn’t happen very often with minke whales, which are more shy than humpbacks. We continued sailing further out to sea and, after about 40 minutes, we came across some dolphins. Although there weren’t many of them, they stayed with us for a few minutes, even swimming right under our boat, leaving everyone in awe. Not far from the dolphins, we spotted some whale blows in the distance; judging by the size, it was probably a humpback. We went to check but found nothing; we couldn’t see it properly – it had probably been submerged for a while. However, we knew that just a 10-minute boat ride away there was another humpback, and we could glimpse some large splashes in the distance. It seemed, that the whale was particularly active and playful, so we went to check it out. What we found was a spectacular show of tail slaps and a few breaches right in front of our boat, just a few metres away! How beautiful, but above all, what a thrill to see it from so close!
