Whale Watching Daily Diary – April 3rd 2026

Humpback whale flukes showing their unique black and white pattern

We set off on this morning’s whale-watching tour with the sea a little choppy, but with excellent visibility and the sun shining right in our faces.
We set course for the open bay and cruised for a long time before spotting the first signs of marine mammals. We managed it – a blow 800 metres away – it was a minke whale, swimming alone, and at first it was very difficult to locate due to the fairly large waves.
Fortunately, we managed to spot it clearly a few times as it surfaced right in front of our boat, about 80 metres away!

In the afternoon, the waves calmed down, and the sun continued to warm us. We wanted to return to the spot where we’d seen the minke, but just past the Grota lighthouse we spotted a much larger blow – a solitary, adult humpback! It was very calm and showed us its beautiful tail several times.

So we ended the day having spotted two species of whale – definitely a successful day!
