Whale Watching Daily Diary – April 4th 2026
Today in Faxafloi Bay, we experienced every possible season – the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, and we even had a snowstorm!
Fortunately, a minke whale was waiting for us almost at the harbour gate! A solitary, adult individual – actively hunting. Most minke whales migrate to warmer parts of the world in winter for breeding purposes. Warm waters aren’t as rich in food, so these whales often fast for nearly six months before reaching colder waters – such as Iceland – where they begin their feeding season. This whale is therefore likely starving, so we fully understand its behaviour!
We decided to continue our expedition in search of other whales, and we spotted some very elusive harbour porpoises today, as well as just three dolphins, which disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.
The minke whale, however, remained in the same spot all day – it definitely stole the show today!
