Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; Wild white-beaked dolphin jumping

Morning Whale Watching Tour

We started today with quite rough seas and persistent winds, from which there was no escape. Our passengers were incredibly brave to stay outside, but it paid off! Not far north of Engey, we encountered a pod of white-beaked dolphins! There were about five of them, swimming on both the left and right sides of our ship, feeling extremely playful amid the rough waves. We must admit that it was quite a challenging task for us, as the dolphins were really fast and the wind did not make observation easy. We decided to leave the pod behind in search of other species… but with no luck. Therefore, on the way back, we checked once again to see how the dolphins were doing, but due to the difficult conditions, we decided to offer our passengers a complimentary ticket so that they could return and try whale watching in more favourable circumstances.

Afternoon Whale Watching Tour

In the afternoon, the weather changed completely! The wind died down, the sun came out, and the sea calmed down too… what luck, because the pod of white-beaked dolphins was still quite close to Engey, and this time it was much more pleasant to watch them jumping out of the water!

To the east of Viðey, we also saw what we had failed to spot in the morning – two big blows of humpbacks! We spent the rest of our tour in the company of Banana and Apple – our regulars, who treated us to another great show today. The whales surfaced quite close to us, so we could hear them clearly, we saw their beautiful tails many times, and we left the spot with big smiles on our faces.

One day and two, such different trips – if you don’t like the weather in Iceland, wait five minutes… as the old saying goes, right?
