Whale Watching Daily Diary – March 16th 2026
A beautiful day on Faxfloi Bay – gentle waves, a northerly breeze and the sun shining right in our faces. Perfect conditions for whale watching!
We started the morning tour with a large pod of white-beaked dolphins; they were clearly busy hunting for fish, very active, changing position every few moments. Not far from the dolphins, we spotted a much larger blow – it was Banana! Just as active, we saw her beautiful tail countless times, as the whale surfaced every few moments. On the way back, a large pod of harbour porpoises crossed our path; for this species, they swam really close to Amelia. A great start to the day.
In the afternoon, the weather improved, and we had surprisingly good conditions. This time, the first whale to appear before our eyes was a humpback – Banana again – and in the distance there was also a minke whale! Very elusive, it showed itself to us just three times before swimming away. What we saw next exceeded our expectations – a massive pod of dolphins, over 40 of them feeding in one spot, surrounded by a whole flock of birds. After a while, our humpback joined them too, and we marvelled at the open-air whale buffet. It was incredible!
