Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; white beaked dolphins surfacing

Today is a perfect weather window – calm seas, a light breeze and the sun shining right in our faces!

We therefore set off on our morning tour hoping to encounter some marine mammals. We set a course north, and shortly afterwards we spotted the first blow… much larger than what we’d expect from a humpback whale. An unexpected guest appeared before our eyes – a fin whale! The second-largest of the cetaceans – what an honour. There were also a great many birds in the area, so we realised this must be an open buffet full of fish!

We were not mistaken, for moments later we spotted another fin whale, four humpback whales and a surprising mega pod of white-beaked dolphins. Usually we see this species in pods of 4 to 8 individuals – today, in one spot, we encountered over a hundred dolphins actively hunting. A real treat for nature lovers; even the crew members had never seen so many animals in one place! To say the day was fantastic is an understatement!
