Whale Watching Daily Diary – March 25th 2026
The plan was simple – to find some marine mammals, but today it felt like it was they who found us! We started with a nimble minke whale, which surfaced just before the Grota lighthouse. As is usually the case, minke wasn’t particularly keen on cooperating, so we moved on.
Shortly afterwards, a few harbour porpoises appeared – three of them were swimming towards the fjord. So we began the tour with elusive and shy whale species, but it was a great opportunity to practise the clock system. We were ready for more.
And we were in luck, because after less than 20 minutes we spotted a whole lot of splashes in the distance. Around a hundred white-beaked dolphins were swimming, leaping and playing in the waves as they moved towards us. At one point they surrounded us and moved on towards the east. A truly mesmerising moment!
We decided to head further west, and it paid off, because in the distance we spotted what we’d been looking for – a large humpback whale! We had the chance to spend a few wonderful moments with this adult specimen; at one point it even surfaced just 50 metres from our boat. Amazing!
So we saw them all – the four whale species, making it a beautiful day in Faxafloi Bay.
