Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; Humpback tail fluke diving

Morning Whale Watching Tour

The morning started with snowy skies over Reykjavík Harbour as we prepared to head out into Faxaflói Bay. The sea had some movement, but conditions were still good for searching. We headed out with high hopes and began scanning the wide bay. One of our two boats was lucky enough to spot a whale far away, right in the middle of the bay, after a long trip out. At a distance, it was also possible to spot the blows of other individuals — at least two more. One of them came closer to the boat and showed its magnificent tail to our passengers.

The rest of us stayed closer to Reykjavík, carefully searching the area and keeping our eyes on the surface. Despite our best efforts and lots of patient scanning, the whales remained elusive this time.

Afternoon Whale Watching Tour

In the afternoon, all of us decided to try again and headed back out into Faxaflói Bay. After some searching in the snow, we returned to the same area where the whale had been spotted earlier in the day. Patience paid off! After a while of scanning the waves, we finally spotted a blow to the left — and then one to the right, quite far away. The distant one breached eight times in a row! We couldn’t believe it!

This time, it was a completely different whale: super big, with a huge tail bearing a bright white area that lifted above the water before diving down again.

It stayed in the area and gave us several beautiful dives, allowing everyone to admire that impressive tail pattern. Now the big question is… who could this giant be? We’ll have to check the photos and see if we can match that striking white tail to one of our known humpback friends!

A wonderful reward after a patient day of searching on the bay.
