Whale Watching Daily Diary – May 16th 2026

Morning tour

The sea has calmed down considerably today. Despite the forecast predicting rough seas, we found gentle waves and a light breeze – perfect conditions for spotting marine mammals!
We didn’t have to wait long today, as we spotted a pod of orcas near the Gróta lighthouse! This is a very rare sight in our bay; this species visits us three to four times a year. A fantastic show that delighted not only our passengers but also the crew. In the end, we spotted around 7–8 orcas. One male swimming a few hundred metres away, and two calves jumping and performing various acrobatic manoeuvres alongside the females.

Afternoon tour

In the afternoon, we set course straight for the open bay, and this time we found the orcas much further out. Whereas in the morning all the orcas (apart from the playful calves) had been very calm, in the afternoon we witnessed a scene we will never forget. An adult male swimming with a calf was hunting a harbour porpoise. First, the orcas played with their prey, later shared the meal amongst themselves. And all this right in front of our ship, leaving us all speechless. Nature is truly impressive!
A few miles away from the pod of orcas, we also spotted a regular visitor to Faxaflói – a humpback whale. Although it didn’t show us its tail, we ended the tour with huge smiles on our faces.
