Whale Watching Daily Diary – May 4th 2026
As soon as we set out to sea today, it felt like a perfect spring’s day: visibility was excellent, and the sky was clear with not a cloud in sight. The sea conditions weren’t perfect, but they weren’t too bad either; there was just a slight swell, but nothing that would significantly affect visibility. We explored the bay far and wide in search of whales, ending up not far from Keflavík. On the way back, as we drew closer to Reykjavík, right in front of Mount Esja, we were lucky enough to spot some white-beaked dolphins, which turned out to be very curious. Some of them began to follow us and leap in front of our boat. These animals are incredibly agile and truly adorable, as well as fast and unpredictable. After about ten minutes of this spectacle, they decided to vanish into the waves. At this point, we continued our journey, hoping to encounter another species. The highlight came near the harbour, when a minke whale popped up out of the water. It even took two dives right next to the boat, which is quite unusual for a minke whale, a species known for being rather shy. We therefore spent another 10 minutes in its company before heading back to Reykjavik!
