Whale Watching Daily Diary – November 13th 2025

The day was cold and cloudy, it felt like it might snow but it didn´t come and there was no wind, so there was an otherworldy feel the whole day here in Reykjavik.

We´ve been lucky to have amazing whales close to the harbour this whole month, in between the islands, so that´s where we started our search today. The sea was nice and calm, and it wasn´t long before we spotted a fin sticking up through the water. It was a humpback whale! It was so calm and garceful, gently surfacing and taking its time before diving again. Just incredible to see. We spent some time with it before heading off to see what else was out in Faxafloi, and after a short search we found a minke whale zooming about, evidently hunting fish. It wasn´t very interested in us but came quite close so we all had a good look. We never whant to bother the animals and resting and feeding are both critical behaviours the animals must do to survive, so we we thrilled to see them doing exactly that.

In the afternoon tour, we decided to set sails to deeper part of the bay and after an hour we spotted first minke whale! It was just couple of breaths on the surface and it disappeared. Luckily, right after that a big blow came out from the water in a distance of 200 meters. Beautiful, grown up humpack showed us it’s tail couple of times, once surfacing very close to our boat. The tour was absolutely excellent with the cherry on the cake being some playful harbour porpoises joining us on the way back to the harbour!
