Whale Watching Daily Diary – October 27th 2025

It has been cold lately, and the mountains are all snowcapped now, but the sea was nice and calm as we sailed out from Reykjavik harbour to look for whales. We took a turn through the islands, seeing lots of seabirds, including a group of feeding gulls. Then we saw some water markings – whale footprints, and woosh! That is what we wanted, a great big blow. Then another one right next to it. Not one but two humpback whales right in between the islands. We could see there were lots of fish in the area but they weren´t going mad feeding, just taking their time with lots of rest and logging at the surface which was great as we all got to see them really clearly.

Despite the shallow water they showed off their tails with huge tail dives several times really near the boats so we could see them in detail. We then continued our tour, looping round and again seeing a lot of birds but no other marine mammals. However on the way back in towards the harbour we found the humpback whales were there again. This time they did some beautiful high slow dives alongside us which was wonderful to see. We could clearly see the scars on their bodies and the tubecules on their rostrums (Noses)

It started snowing very lightly on the way back in. What a picturesque and wonderful day!
