Whale Watching Daily Diary – October 3 2025

Such a brilliant day out in Faxafloi!

On the morning tour we had barely got out of the harbour before we found a large minke whale playing around the boat, absolutely relaxed in our presence – such a joy to see. As we left the islands we found a pod of harbour porpoises jumping nearby, but we didn´t stay with them long and headed out into deep water to look for other species.

Some white beaked dolphins found us before we found them! They were very playful, bowriding and zigzagging under the yacht. We carried on further out and then we saw a big blow in the distance! A humpback whale! We approached slowly and then the whale decided to investigate us – coming right underneath our bow and showing its huge tail before diving deep. We left it there and headed back to shore. Calms sea, no wind, sunshine, and all four species. Heaven!

The afternoon tour had the same wonderful weather as the morning, and we got out quite far before we saw anything, but porpoises suddenly appeared to the right of the yacht very close…then on the left too! Then amongst them all a large minke whale came up out of no where and stayed nearby for quite some time with the sunshine glinting off its smooth back.

We wanted to find the humpbacks so headed towards the same area as this morning but nothing was there, but then to the north we saw a great blow and headed over – to find the humpback whale laying on its back and slapping its pectoral fins again and again. It did some big dives showing off its tail, then we saw another blow further out and headed out to see that humpback too! It also showed us its tail so we got to compare the two different tail patterns which was awesome.

Over all it was an excellent day, after the waves of last week it was great to be back on the ocean and showing wonderful animals to wonderful people.
