Whale Watching Daily Diary –18th June 2026

Humpback whale flukes showing their unique black and white pattern

Morning Tour

What a difference a day can make! This morning, Faxaflói Bay greeted us with calm conditions, no wind, excellent visibility, and water as smooth as glass. The peaceful sea made it easy to spot wildlife, and it did not take long before we found ourselves surrounded by activity.

Throughout the tour, we encountered numerous pods of harbour porpoises. These small cetaceans were especially active, appearing across the bay and delighting our guests with their quick movements through the calm waters.

The highlight of the morning was the sighting of four humpback whales actively feeding. The whales were busy hunting in a productive feeding area, surfacing frequently as they moved through schools of prey. Watching these magnificent animals work the area together provided an exciting and memorable experience for everyone on board.

Afternoon Tour

The beautiful conditions continued into the afternoon, with calm seas and outstanding visibility accompanying us throughout the tour. Harbour porpoises were once again spotted in several locations, and we were also treated to the company of a pod of energetic white-beaked dolphins travelling through the bay.

The afternoon belonged to the humpback whales. In total, we encountered 8 individuals, each displaying different behaviours. Closer to shore, a few solitary humpbacks appeared completely relaxed, surfacing calmly and often showing their impressive tail flukes before diving beneath the surface.

Further offshore, however, the atmosphere changed dramatically. It felt as though we had arrived at an open-ocean buffet, with multiple humpbacks actively feeding in a rich foraging area. The whales surfaced repeatedly as they hunted, creating an incredible spectacle all around us.

One particularly large humpback delivered the moment of the day. The whale surfaced right beside our boat before slowly circling around us several times, almost as if it wanted to politely greet every single person on board. The encounter left both guests and crew speechless and was a perfect reminder of how special these animals can be.
