Whale Watching Daily Diary – May 30th 2026

Reykjavik Iceland, whale watching Tour photo; Humpback whale floating upside down with its fins held high out of the water

Morning Tour

A calm morning welcomed us out onto Faxaflói Bay, with smooth seas, excellent visibility, and only a light drizzle drifting across the water from time to time. These conditions made for a very pleasant trip and allowed us to scan large areas of the bay with ease.

Before long, we were rewarded with a fantastic sighting of a humpback whale. The whale appeared to be in a playful mood, spending time rolling onto its back near the surface and repeatedly slapping the water with its long pectoral fins. This behaviour gave everyone on board incredible views and plenty of opportunities to appreciate the agility and personality of these magnificent animals.

With seabirds scattered across the bay and the Icelandic coastline clearly visible in the distance, it was a beautiful start to the day.

Afternoon Tour

The favourable conditions continued into the afternoon, although a gentle drizzle accompanied us for part of the journey. The sea remained calm and visibility stayed excellent, making for another enjoyable excursion.

Later in the tour, we located another humpback whale travelling closer to shore! Unlike the energetic individual from the morning, this whale was very relaxed, moving steadily through the area and allowing us to observe it for an extended period. As it dove beneath the surface, it gave us some beautiful fluke displays that drew admiration from everyone on board.
