GET TO KNOW OUR WHALES!

Today, 15th of August, all our tours have been canceled due to sea conditions. However, we’re using this time in the office to continue working on our passion: our beloved whales!

We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share some interesting facts about the individuals you can see on our tours, and how we get to know them better. The website Happywhale is incredibly useful in this regard. Every day, we upload our own fluke photos with GPS locations to contribute to community science and to provide you with more detailed information about the whales that visit us: how long they stay in the area, where they migrate, and much more.

For example, here’s one of our fluke photos:

Each humpback whale is given a unique ID identifier (e.g., HW-MN0102474), allowing contributors to track specific whales. Interestingly, someone decided to name one of our regular visitors “David Blowie”!

We can also track individual movements through contributions from others.

And with contributions from other countries, we can even discover where our humpbacks have spent the winter! For example, some of these individuals migrate to Guadeloupe, Madeira, or Cape Verde—covering thousands upon thousands of kilometers! This is why they’re so busy now, eating as much as they can.

Join us on our tours and uncover the hidden stories of these wonderful creatures!
