Daily diary – February 26 2025

Despite the overnight snow, today was sunny with blue skies! Overall, the sea was pretty good, with a bit of swell. We headed back to Hafnarfjodur, but were soon interrupted by a pod of white-beaked dolphins just past Engey! There was about 10-15 of them and they were swimming really fast through the water, breaking the surface with their dorsal fin. We quickly headed back on course so that we could see what was in Hafnarfjodur harbour! When we arrived we found a humpback whale swimming around. A few seals also popped up to say hi.

It was a little bit choppier for the afternoon but we were well rewarded for it! As we were approaching Hafnarfjodur, we got a call to turn around from our other boat as they had found two humpbacks a little bit further back out. As we got closer, one of them was from this morning! They had been busy travelling out from the harbour. They were pec-slapping as if to say hello to us! They then started rolling, peduncle throwing and even more pec-slapping. Then out of nowhere, one of them breached! It was a sight to see!
