Daily diary – September 23 2024

This mornings weather was perfect! The skies were clear, the visibility was incredible and there were no waves at all! As we headed out into the bay, we saw little groups of harbour porpoises! Soon enough we came across a very calm and sleeping humpback whale!! He swam around the other boat in front of us, and gave everyone a show with some spyhopping and tail-slap! We then headed out to see what else we could find, and soon enough, we came across several minke whales! Surprisingly, one individual swam right towards our Amelia Rose and showed us the white banding on its pectoral fins! On our way back to the harbour we stopped by the humpback whale once more so that everyone could get another good look!

The beautiful weather carried over to the afternoon, with even calmer seas! We caught up with the humpback whale from this morning, an individual that we´ve seen for the last 5 days!! He was still very sleepy during this tour, but came really close to the boat for everyone to see him and gave us really beautiful fluke dives! Once we left the humpback whale, we came across a really active pod of harbour porpoises and were able to get a really good look at their triangular dorsal fins! As we headed out further into the bay, we were among lots of minke whales that kept popping up in every direction!

We set sail again into the beautiful bay for an evening tour, unfortunately we couldn´t find the humpback whale from earlier, but came across a small pod of harbour porpoises! As we headed out, we saw a few big blows on the horizon, and went to check them out! As we approached them, we could see that these blows were coming from minke whales! One individual was displaying some behaviours that nobody has ever seen before! It kept sticking its head in and out of the water, but shortly after began to swim around the boat! After spending some time with the minke whales, we headed back towards the harbour and finally found the humpback whale! He was a lot more active than this morning and afternoon tour! We got to see a lot of feeding behaviours, as it was bubblenet feeding! We got a beautiful sunset as we headed back!
