Daily diary – September 18 2024
This morning, we sailed out into the somewhat foggy bay seeing small groups of harbour porpoises. As we ventured further out into the bay, the fog lifted, and we came across a mixture of minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and a pair of humpback whales! We were surrounded! What a surreal moment! Dolphins were bow-riding and jumping through the waves. What a beautiful way to start our day in Faxafloi Bay.
By the afternoon tour, the sun started to come out a bit more and the wind picked up, but not enough to stop us! We braved the weather and again saw harbour porpoises not long after leaving the harbour! Once we neared the area from this morning, we started seeing blows pop up in every direction. White-beaked dolphins were bow-riding again, and shortly after we found several pairs and individuals of humpback whales. We then went over to an individual that was surrounded by dolphins, jumping and playing together. The humpback whale even showed off and gave us a few rolls and tail slaps, and came right up to the boat to say hello to everyone. It was magical. On our way back to the harbour, a minke whale popped up just so that we could see all four species on both trips!
