Daily Diary – July 9th 2023

Whale Watching in Reykjavik. Whale tail breaching the water.

Daily diary of whale watching from Reykjavik Old Harbour, on the yacht Amelia Rose, on July 9th 2023 – written by Lucky.

Another absolutely stunning day out on the water in Faxafloi today. The sun is shining and it’s so hot the locals are wearing shorts and t-shirts!

The water was beautifully calm, and we headed straight out to the feeding grounds despite there being so many bords closer to the shore. The visibility was incredible – we could see all the way to Snaefellsjokull which is over 100km away.

In the distance we say a large blow, hanging in the air for a long time as there was almost no wind.

We motored closer to it and actually found multiple humpbacks and minke whales both in the same area, evidently getting their fill of fish to get them nice and fat ready to migrate again in the autumn.

A combination of perfect weather, calm seas, and beautiful wildlife!

Here are some of the animals we saw today.

Humpback whales

Minke whales

Puffins

Fulmars

Arctic terns

Kittiwakes
